The Ruby Pantry Vegan Pastas - All You Need for a Healthy Diet

Image
According to the latest statistics, approximately 4 million Filipinos have diabetes, I included. If you don’t have diabetes, good for you. I know firsthand how difficult it is to find the types of food that won’t negatively affect my blood sugar level. For us, diabetics, a healthy diet means very low on sugar and carbohydrates. I can avoid sugary foods and drinks, such as cakes and ice cream because I don’t really have a sweet tooth. But carbohydrates? Man, that’s so hard to avoid! 😒 The Philippines is known for being a rice-eating country, and rice is loaded with carbohydrates, so if you have diabetes, you know you have to cut down on your consumption. But there isn’t seem to be an alternative available in the Philippine market that can make you equally full like rice does. Even pastas are full of carbohydrates, too. It’s considered one of the worst enemies of diabetics. How difficult is that? But lo and behold! With drum rolls, I present to you – The Ruby Pantry. Founded in 20

Joaquin's Gourmet Tuyo - A Marvelous Dress Up for this Poor Man's Meal

Image
If you’re a Filipino, I’m pretty sure that tuyo (salted, dried fish) has graced your table one way or the other. While it’s known as a poor man’s meal, tuyo is a classic Filipino delicacy that captured the hearts of many Filipinos, rich or poor. Pair it with some steamed or fried rice and vinegar or tomatoes, and you’ll have your stomach and heart full in a flash. Now, I can almost see your mouth watering. 🤤🤤🤤 But recently, there seems to be a clamor for the leveled-up version of tuyo – gourmet tuyo. The truth is, gourmet tuyo was already existing since the 1980s. There’s no clear record of where it actually originated. Some say it started in Bacolod City and some say it was in Davao. Wherever it originated, one thing is sure – it changed the way we perceived the infamous tuyo. But it wasn’t until the internet was invented when people all around the archipelago learned about it. Today, you will see tons of different brands available in the market originating from any part of t

5 Reasons Why You Should Try Maknae Kimchi Right Now!

Let's cut the crap and get straight to the point. We're all crazy about kimchi, right? That super tasty side dish that's full of umami flavor seems to be on everyone's table these days. Thanks to K-Pop sensations, such as BTS, Twice, Lee Min Ho (of course 💓), and more. Kimchi has become part of our culture now and must be among the country's most popular foreign food products of this decade. But the origin of Kimchi dated as far back as the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD in Korea. People there have long been preserving their foods to have continuous supplies even during the harsh winter months. So, when the first cabbage came to Korea around 2030 BC, Korean families learned to ferment them for preservation. By the 16th century, the first species of chilis arrived in the country. They’ve added it to the kimchi ingredients, and voila!☝ The recipe that we know today was born. But more than just being popular and associated with your K-Pop idols, kimchi has

Momi Lani's Chorizo de Cebu - The Sweet and Spicy Balls of Deliciousness

The Philippines is not very famous for its sausages. Foodies from all over the world will easily tell you that the best sausages are in Europe, and I couldn’t agree more. When I was still working on a cruise ship ages ago, I used to get off just to buy some of those delectable sausages in Oslo (Norway), St. Malo (France), and Cagliari (Italy). They are dense, juicy, and simply delicious. But those were the days, and that’s a story for another day. Or maybe not. For someone who had already tasted some of the best sausages out there (modesty aside) 😁, you'll tend to find something equally delicious in your own country. If not of the same taste, quality, and texture, it should be satisfying enough, to say the least. Of course, our local sausages are called longganisa, and we have some popular types that I've already tasted – Vigan, Alaminos, Lucban, Tuguegarao, and more. All carry the name of the province they are made from and comes with the word "longganisa."
